Syllabus: Beyond Doctoral Supervision – scholarship and academic values

This course syllabus was confirmed by The Research Programmes Board at the Faculty of Science on 6 March 2023. The course corresponds to one week of work. The course syllabus is formally approved in Swedish. This is a translation.

Learning outcomes

This course aims to prepare for the supervision, teaching, and assessment of students at the doctoral level, and to prepare for a senior career in or outside
academia.

On completion of the course, participants shall be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Describe the basic rules and regulations for doctoral studies at the Faculty of Science
  • Explain scientific codes of conduct and research integrity
  • Be aware of the role of teacher and supervisor in doctoral education
  • Define and explain academic freedom and freedom of speech in academia and in society
  • Understand the doctoral thesis defence process and the role of the opponent and the grading committee
  • Explain the role of the supervisor as PI (Principal Investigator)

Competence and skills

  • Demonstrate the role and use of the individual study plan (ISP) in doctoral studies
  • Be able to relate the research process and research results to the wider society and understand the possibilities and limitations of research and the researcher's responsibility in a broader perspective

Judgement and approach

  • Explain and relate to the concepts of collegiality and collegial leadership
  • Relate to academic collegiality in a wider context 

Course content

The course puts research and doctoral education in a broader context. It aims to prepare for a further career in or outside academia by clarifying the role of research in society, basic academic attitudes and principles, academic rights and responsibilities. The emphasis is on the role of the researcher and teacher in postgraduate education.

Forms of instructions

Teaching consists of lectures, group discussions and individual assignments. All parts of the course are compulsory.

Forms of assessment

The assessment is based on written and oral individual assignments and through participation in all compulsory parts.

Grades

Possible grades are Pass and Fail. For a grade of Pass, one must pass the individual assignments and participate in all compulsory components.

Language of instruction

The course is given in English.

This course is mandatory as a partial fulfilment of the requirements for the appointment as an associate professor at the Faculty of Science.
