Applying for promotion

Promotion from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer

As an associate senior lecturer, you have the right to apply for promotion to senior lecturer. In order to be promoted, you must meet the requirements and be assessed as suitable according to the grounds for assessment. You can only apply for promotion once.

To be promoted from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer, language level B1 in Swedish must be achieved. This applies to those employed from 1 January 2025.

Promotion from lecturer to senior lecturer, or from senior lecturer to professor

From 1 July 2025, there will be two application rounds each year: 30 September and 31 March. This means the Academic Appointments Board will make its initial assessment of applications twice a year. There will no longer be a single, consolidated review process.

If you hold a permanent position as lecturer or senior lecturer, you may apply for promotion to a higher position. Your application should be initiated and planned through a dialogue with your Head of Department and can initially be discussed during your performance review.

Your promotion must be based on a strategic consideration by the Head of Department. This document should be included in your application and must also contain an assessment of your documented contributions to the development of the department and your suitability for promotion. The final decision on whether your application will be considered rests with the Faculty Dean.

To be promoted from senior lecturer to professor, you must demonstrate Swedish language proficiency at level B2.

Strategic consideration by the Head of Department

If you are applying for promotion from lecturer to senior lecturer, or from senior lecturer to professor, you must include a strategic consideration from your Head of Department, using the faculty template.
