Initiatives in Computational Science
The faculty is making major strategic investments in the field of computational science. So far, this has resulted in eight master's specialisations, two doctoral programmes and a newly formed network for researchers.
Computational science
Computational science uses mathematical models, computer simulations and machine learning to conduct predictions and analyses, or to replace experiments. It involves handling large amounts of data to look for patterns, correlations and trends. Computational science is useful for a very wide range of topics, which has led to a growing need to gather expertise and share experiences across disciplines.
Education at Master's level
The faculty has eight master's specialisations in the field of computational science. These give students the opportunity to study computational science with a focus on either geoscience, physics, scientific computing, biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology or physical geography. The programmes have a high number of applicants, with particularly strong interest from international students.
The faculty’s master's specialisations in computational science:

- Computational Science, Physics (lunduniversity.lu.se)
- Computational Science, Scientific Computing (lunduniversity.lu.se)
- Applied Computational Science, Biology (lunduniversity.lu.se)
- Applied Computational Science, Chemistry (lunduniversity.lu.se)
- Applied Computational Science, Environmental Science (lunduniversity.lu.se)
- Applied Computational Science, Geology (lunduniversity.lu.se)
- Applied Computational Science, Physical Geography (lunduniversity.lu.se)
Doctoral studies
The faculty has two doctoral programmes in computational science. During the education, the doctoral students learn to master tools and calculation methods for various scientific applications.

Network for researchers
The faculty's network in computational science brings together researchers from different departments. The purpose is, among other things, to benefit from each other's expertise. Meetings and seminars are presented on the COMPILE website. Major activities are announced in the faculty's internal newsletter. Please get in touch with the contact persons (see right-hand column) if you want to join the network.
