Preparing to come
Most students from countries outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) need to have a residence permit to study in Sweden. If this is the case for you, we advised you to apply for a residence permit online as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance. Applications for residence permits are processed by the Swedish Migration Board.
As an exchange student at Lund University, you have a special health insurance (Student IN), which is provided by the Swedish government. The cover is restricted to the period of time you are in Sweden, as specified in your Letter of Acceptance. If you are from the EU/EEA you should bring your European Health Insurance Card. You may bring additional health insurance if you want to.
Money and living costs
Your living costs in Sweden will naturally depend on your individual lifestyle. The Swedish currency is the krona. It is abbreviated SEK. To compare, SEK 100 is roughly 10 euro or 11 United States dollar. Please see a currency converter for updated rates and for rates in your own currency.
A typical Swedish student budget is SEK 8,500 per month covering food, housing, clothing, books/materials, and leisure time. If you rent accommodation via LU Accommodation you can expect typical rents to range from SEK 3,200–4,800 per month, depending on the specific accommodation you are offered.
Arrival Day and Orientation Weeks
Most international students arrive in Lund on Arrival Day, which takes place one or two weeks before the start of the semester. To make your arrival as smooth and welcoming as possible, our international mentors will meet you at Copenhagen airport. On Arrival Day you will be able to check in and receive all information you need about life in Lund. LU Accommodation representatives will also be present to make it easy for tenants to collect their keys.
If you arrive in Lund on Arrival Day, you also have the opportunity to participate in the Orientation Weeks from the start. The Orientation Weeks are filled with activities and are a great way to make new friends and learn more about Lund and Sweden.
