The new year begins with Janus, the god of transitions, master of beginnings and endings, of alpha and omega, of gates and arches, of journeys and, therefore, probably also of Covid certificates. As always, the month of Janus is a little dark and gloomy. There is not even the promise of a promise of spring yet, although the winter aconite is flowering outside Biskopshuset. Still, January is more welcome than ever. Rarely has there been such a need for an ending and a new beginning. We want to leave two long pandemic years behind us and dare to believe that 2022 will be the year the pandemic ends. Greek has two letters for the ‘o’ sound: omicron and omega. Let us hope they are very similar. That omicron becomes omega, the last letter of the Greek alphabet we will need to learn. Hold on a little longer and we will get there. Signals from both our own government and neighbouring countries indicate that, even amidst the current surge in cases, the end is in sight.
I am full of admiration for how this organisation has handled the challenges we have faced. We have managed to carry out education and research despite all the challenges. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff and students who have brought us through this together.
Things are now also starting to take shape regarding the changes within the faculty. Our Science Village office has worked hard to produce different proposals on what the establishment may look like, and our faculty coordinators Charlotta Turner (Faculty of Science) and Knut Deppert (Faculty of Engineering, LTH) are on tour with a presentation for anyone who may be interested. You are welcome to follow developments on the Science Village office blog. Work is also ongoing to coordinate our efforts in the two areas of environmental geoscience and computational science. Thank you to all those who have contributed to this. It is an exciting development that we will benefit from greatly, although we also need to respect that change takes time and energy. The important thing is to get it right. We will implement the great ideas that emerged from the RQ20 research evaluation, which has provided us with an opportunity to review how we can develop as a faculty and in collaboration with others.
