The Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science at Lund University carries out research and education in all the major areas of natural sciences. The faculty is very highly ranked both in Sweden and internationally regarding its quality and it is closely linked to MAXlab and ESS, the enormous research centers situated in Lund.

Research and education at the Faculty of Science, Lund University, is carried out in the following major areas: biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, earth sciences, physics, astronomy and mathematics. These areas are then divided into a great number of sub-disciplines organized into about 40 sections. The faculty is organized into 9 departments gathered within the northern University Campus. It houses 800 employees and 1700 students.

Undergraduate studies include both a general programme and subject courses. Bachelor and Master’s Degrees can be taken in all of the above mentioned disciplines. All and all the faculty has 16 different Bachelor’s programmes and 17 international Master’s programmes. In addition to this we have the Hospital Physicist programme. The extent of a Ph.D. programme correspond to four years of study. Annually about 70 doctor’s degrees are awarded in 30 different disciplines.

The Faculty of Science has a strong international profile both on undergraduate and research level. The faculty participates in many European exchange programmes for students, such as Socrates, Tempus, EU-Canada and EU-US. Within Scandinavia the faculty takes part in the Nordplus programme and has a bilateral faculty agreement with the University of Copenhagen. On research level the faculty also participates with a large number of projects in EU’s framework programmes.
