Sven Lidin, dean

Sven Lidin

Who are you?
I graduated with a Master’s degree in Engineering in 1986 and moved on to research studies at Lund University. I defended my doctoral thesis in 1990 and worked as a postdoc in Stuttgart before accepting a position as a research fellow. In 1996, I was promoted to professor at Stockholm University and was the dean of the Chemistry Section from 2006 to 2009. During my time in Stockholm, I worked for several research funding bodies, such as the Scientific Council for Natural and Engineering Sciences, the Swedish Research Council and the Foundation for Strategic Research.

I have worked both nationally and internationally through the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the International Union of Crystallography. I was secretary general of the latter organisation from 2005 to 2010. I have also chaired the scientific advisory board for the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids. Since 2015, I have been head of the Department of Chemistry at Lund University.

What are the forthcoming challenges and opportunities facing the faculty?
Strategically, the most important issue for the faculty is how we recruit researchers and teaching staff. Other important issues are how to manage the opportunities offered by Brunnshög, our growing public agency capital and the tendency for research and teaching to be out of step with each other: funding fuels development and as long as research funding is dynamic – whereas education funding is static – they develop at different rates.

How can you contribute?
I have experience of leading organisations mainly dedicated to education and research. I also have extensive experience of evaluating research at various levels and for various organisations. I strive to be a listening leader.


Karin Hall, pro dean for first and second cycle education and deputy dean

Karin Hall

Who are you?
I am a professor of Physical Geography and, since 2012, I have been head of the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (INES). Prior to that, I was director of studies for first cycle education at INES for 12 years. Earlier in my career, I worked at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences as a senior lecturer and director for the science courses within various degree programmes. I was awarded the distinction for Excellent Teaching Practitioner (ETP) 2005.

What are the forthcoming challenges and opportunities facing the faculty?
Naturally finance is important – and over the next few years we must work for a good allocation of resources to first and second cycle education. At the same time, it is essential to focus on our main task – to provide education of the highest quality, where teaching and research are closely connected and centred on students’ knowledge, learning and future working life. A good future education which stimulates students’ creativity and development into skilled scientists is generated within the subjects and in the meeting between them, as well as by making the most of opportunities offered by the strategic research areas and the new infrastructure facilities, for example. In our future development work, we will safeguard the research time allocated to teaching staff and make good educational initiatives worthwhile.

How can you contribute?
I bring a long-standing commitment to educational issues and knowledge and experience from various academic environments and higher education institutions. Having worked for a long time in teaching, research and leadership in various capacities within the University, I believe I can contribute to the development of the faculty as a whole and our first and second cycle education in particular.

 

Anders Tunlid, pro dean for research studies

Anders Tunlid

Who are you?
I am a professor of microbial ecology in charge of an interdisciplinary research project studying the decomposition of dead organic material (humus) at the molecular level. I have taught in the first, second and third cycles and supervised around ten doctoral students. I was also involved in setting up the graduate school in genomic ecology. Over the years, I have had many different assignments, at the Department of Biology, the Centre for Environmental and Climate Research, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and in various research councils, among others. At the faculty level, I have been a member of the academic appointments board and the infrastructure group.

What are the forthcoming challenges and opportunities facing the faculty?
It is important to identify what needs to be done to strengthen the links between various research groups and the facilities at Brunnshög. At the same time, organisations that do not use these facilities should be enabled to develop in a positive way. During the next few years, many teaching staff will retire. It is important to use the resources freed up as a result on new recruitment.

How can you contribute?
I think it is important for the faculty to take overall responsibility for strategic development within both research and education. Central to this kind of work is the production of good documentation, sometimes by obtaining the opinions of external experts. I will work to share out faculty assignments among people and groups beyond the deans and heads of department. The best governance emerges when a competent management is balanced by strong (and critical) collegial structures!

Anders Scherstén

Anders Schersten

I am a senior lecturer at the Department of Geology, engaged in teaching and research in the fields of petrology and geochronology. I am also director of research studies in geology and interested in third cycle education, its design and content. In addition, I am part of the management group at the Department of Geology. I hope to be able to contribute to the faculty’s work in several ways, not least on matters concerning education and research.

 

Dirk Rudolph

Dirk Rudolph

I am a professor at the Department of Physics and conduct research into rare superheavy atomic nuclei and elements. I am also involved in first cycle courses, doctoral student supervision and administration. As a person, I value openness, clarity, fairness and performance. On the faculty board, I will work to ensure secure terms of employment for all, among other things.

 

Jessica Abbott

Jessica Abbott

I am a senior lecturer at the Department of Biology and conduct research into the development of sex chromosomes. As a member of the faculty board, I aim to contribute to an efficient process with well-supported decisions. I am also interested in issues concerning gender equality and popular science and I wish to support initiatives within these areas at the faculty level.

 

Tatyana Turova Schmeling

Tatyana Turova Schmeling

Professor in Mathematical Statistics, working at Mathematical Center since 1997. Besides active scientific international and multi-disciplinary collaborations for 25 years, I am an experienced member of VR boards and hiring committies. This combined with professional skills of a mathematician to exercise and apply pure logic everywhere should help the development of our faculty at high level.


Viveka Alfredsson

Viveka Alfredsson

I am a professor at the Department of Chemistry with a great interest in the communication of knowledge – teaching and research – and I also feel strongly engaged in issues concerning equality and good working conditions. I want to work for the faculty to become a stimulating workplace where employees and students feel at ease and happy to work – a stimulating environment which promotes good research and effective study.

Karin Hofvendahl

Karin Hofvendahl

I am the administrative head of the Centre for Environmental and Climate Research. I studied biochemistry and earned a PhD in microbiology. My contribution to the faculty’s work would be my experience of management and administration both on the university-wide level and on a level similar to a department, at an interdisciplinary centre such as CEC. I also have extensive knowledge of research funding.

 

Ola Gustafsson

Ola Gustafsson

I work as a research engineer in the microscopy unit at the Department of Biology. In the faculty’s work, I can contribute with my experience of technical/administrative activities and my experience from business and industry in the area of purchasing and procurement. For me, an opportunity to work as an elected representative for the faculty’s future development would feel both important and challenging.

Johan Wennerberg

Johan Wennerberg

I work at the pharmaceutical company DuPont Chemoswed AB and am also an associate professor in organic chemistry. During my time in the industry, I have maintained contact with academia through research collaboration, supervision of students, participation on education and examining committees, teaching and production of textbooks. I hope to be able to contribute some kind of wisdom along with my experiences and my contact network beyond academia.

 

Margaretha Serder

Margaretha Serder

I have been an external member of the faculty board since 2016. In my day to day work, I manage R&D in the field of education within the Skåne Association of Local Authorities, focusing on initiatives and collaboration on research and development issues in schools. I will bring my experiences from working with the local authorities in Skåne to the faculty board. I also want to contribute perspectives and knowledge from my research field of educational sciences and teaching.
